It’s that time of year again. The dig is in full swing, (why not follow the dig diary , lots of information and photos) and yesterday was the 1st Open day.
It was favourable weather as we packed up to leave, not sunny, but dry and very warm. The gallery looked a bit empty, but we were closed and left a note to let people know where to come and join in with the days activities.
We were at the Stenness School hall with some bits and pieces and had an excellent day chatting to lots of folk.
There were some very clever and interesting stalls in the hall, manned by many of the folk involved with the dig, showing finds, techniques used and fun things to make and do. There were some astounding dressed stones from the site, some very patient peeps gently removing soil from pottery finds and sifting carefully through floor deposits again from the site, bones, microscopes and much much more. You could get a tattoo, make a Brodgar butterfly, make a felt pebble or even gain a certificate!!! Once you have sampled all the goings on you could enjoy a cuppa, soup, sandwiches and home bakes (delicious) expertly served by a group of ladies.
Oh and don’t forget – VISIT THE DIG – where there was even more going on.
It did rain later in the afternoon, but it didn’t seem to bother anybody.
Don’t worry if you couldn’t make it this time, next open day is on Sunday August 19th 2018
